Attempt to add to YouTube discussion on HE

Copied from email from Times Higher Education -

Her own path through higher education took her from an upbringing in County Durham in the north of England to the White House – and now Fiona Hill is coming home to take up the chancellorship at the University of Durham. The former adviser to three US presidents is in no doubt about the challenges the sector faces. “The future of higher education is on the line here, in the United Kingdom and United States,” she tells my colleague John Morgan. Hill, whose book on finding opportunity in the 21st century was published last year, argues that education has struggled to keep up with the economic changes of society, primarily down to problems with access. She hopes to change that at Durham, an institution known for the low proportion of students it takes from the surrounding region. The miner’s daughter believes the key is taking higher education beyond the elites and doing more to benefit the communities where such institutions are based. In this way, higher education can really live up to its promises, she says.

Today we talk to former White House adviser Fiona Hill as she looks ahead to her new role as chancellor at the University of Durham. The author of a major book on opportunity, Dr Hill is forthright about the perilous position universities are in.

I tried to comment about this on the YouTube video for a lecture by Peter Horrocks on the Fortress University. But comments are turned off. So added a comment to my own comment video. More next year ( I am away from desktop and the Chromebook is ok bur rhe design of YouTube options is a bit strange for me)
