Puttnam Report on Trust, Futurelearn, Archewell

The Lords report on Digital Technology and the of Resurrection of Trust is a bit disappointing compared to the presentation from Lord David Puttnam as part of the Futurelearn Festival of Learning last week. Futurelearn is clearly a development from the campus with a positive direction. The Lords report ignores the question of trust in newspapers and broadcast media. You could get the impression that the only problem is the platforms and the people who use them.

There seems to be an emphasis on regulation and enforcement. OFCOM could expand a role into online. but trust is built by encouraging ways of working that avoid difficult issues. I used to write for the English language version of OhmyNews. The model of citizen journalism depended on editors to check facts and provide training. I am not sure how things work now in Korea but any future report could investigate.

Media now too complicated to ignore the newspapers. Professional journalists are on Twitter, have a look.

Several talks from the Futurelearn events are now on YouTube. Towards the end notice claim that there is now ample funding available for EdTech. Not so long ago some OU opinion doubted that the investment in Futurelearn was sound. There could be an update article by Peter Wilby.

In Durham previously, Peter Horrocks spoke about Fortress Journalism as well as the Fortress University. Worth another look to reconsider.

Meanwhile Mail Online reports that Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in solidarity with groups calling for a Facebook boycott. They also have concerns about UK newspapers. It may be that they have more scope being based in  Los Angeles. The House of Lords has to be careful as unlikely to leave the UK so remains close to Fleet Street.

--------------------------------------------

This text could be sent to OhmyNews editors in various versions depending on the most suitable event to put at the beginning. My guess main news is that Futurelearn platform is viable or at least able to get funding.

Copyright, Grateful Dead, Bobby

Unusual conditions at this time so I may be confused. Lockdown continues so unable to access Phonic FM studio. Slowly put shows together at home using video edit. Mostly fits slot for drama show but bits of two others so a mix. Pre recorded shows can be uploaded but I was late for Thursday 10 -12 slot last week. It should go out this week but I also put on YouTube partly to show others ahead of the next one.

Last week around Creative Commons , both extracts from MOOC and also Internet Archive. Two tracks from Grateful Dead and I included an advert for WorkingMen's Dead , found on YouTube.

Unfortunately the AI copyright check routine, I think, mistook this for a complete track of Uncle Johns Band , part of a remastered release as box set later this year. So blocked in all countries. Not sure WMG follow the Dead business model. They will include two CDs of live tracks and undoubtedly will have worked on the remaster.

Then later the AI had a problem with my copy to explain the next one. "No advert" suggested a scam or spam apparently. I think it must be certain words rather than the meaning.

Anyway, I must have some sort of record so very careful with the next one. Recent Aretha release originally with Mary J Blige on movie Bobby. Could play promo for this but would this alarm the AI ?

The movie Bobby is on YouTube UK in full for a small payment.

So I will tweet to @NBCUniversal who may have some legitimate promo sounds. Or they could send an email to forward to YouTube or something.

Show will also include Dead from internet archive.

Content Marketing as Process @MariansFm #PhonicFM

Trying out video as promo for radio. Possibly enough stats to map as process. This Thursday 10 -12 Marian Holding covers for Wild Show on Phonic FM. Lockdown studio limit to one person at a time so she has a lot to do. Social media probably starts with Facebook but she also has started a Twitter account - @MariansFm .

I have done a video based on last week. The phone is not easy to set up but this week should be ok. Chris Norton intends to phone in but some issues so far. My thought is that the video may encourage people to follow the Twitter feed /  send in requests . There may be enough numbers to study a connection.

Previously I have come across statistical process control, used often in manufacturing. Last month so much milk resulted in so much cheese, but what about next month. The words used may be different but is there a way to check what is thought to happen with content marketing? Maybe a clip from this week should be added as video. But somehow different approach?

Anyway today Monday 17 views of video, up from 15 but no change in 3 followers for @MariansFm .

Updates before Thursday as tweets @will789gb

Creative Commons , Grateful Dead, WMG , YouTube

This post is a sort of text version of a radio show. I cover Drama Hour for the Storyteller on Phonic FM over summer travels. Studio beginning to open but not before 10am so I have tried to do one show as edit at home. The drama aspect is JG Ballard story from Internet Archive and proposal for a scifi romcom set in 2025 to discuss blended learning and the campus. Music includes Grateful Dead from Internet Archive and other track , see below.

I have sent an mp3 to Phonic FM which they may broadcast. I wanted to upload also to YouTube to show people what is intended. I hope to find more clips around open education over next few months.

Problem started by including advert for Working Men's Dead. It helped to break up chat and also seemed to me reasonable as mix with free content. I think the AI may be confused as there is a new release out in July. I did not include a complete track of Uncle John's Band.

So then I took the advert out, included an explanation, and the upload was ok. Several Copyright Claims but each one reasonable.

I got the Smoove and Turrell tracks by email from willwork4funk . The Toni Braxton tracks were streamed from YouTube. Agreed this is not the best option but may well happen sometimes. © 2020 Island Records, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc. I have bought a CD of the Babyface one and Cigarettes and Coffee, both ridiculously cheap at HMV Exeter at this time. Anyway I notice Island did not block the content being available.

However a few minutes later I found the video had gone, due to policy on spam, deceptive practices and scams.

I have made an appeal with explanation

I cannot see what is wrong with it. Intended as discussion on Creative Commons. Contains Grateful Dead tracks from Internet Archive. Previously (see other version) advert for Workingmens Dead. I have replaced this with voice explanation as banned in all countries at request of WMG. There is no full version of Uncle John's Band included, I think the AI is confused about the 2020 remaster. I have to explain the gap somehow. I want to publicise other content about open education. Sorry if my words cause offence to YouTube or WMG. It should be possible to discuss copyright and Creative Commons in terms you would allow on your site. Any guidance is welcome. Meanwhile I will cease any attempt to edit a version of this content that would upload to YouTube. Some of it will appear on other sites.

Since writing that I have decided not to do anything more with music for a while but the Creative Commons / MOOC section was already on Soundcloud

Smoove and Turrell connection continues through tweets. Look forward to new CD from Toni Braxton, any info welcome.

50th Anniversary Box Set Working Men's Dead is out in July. About £30 with two CDs of live tracks. Presumably the budget for a remaster has been well spent. But you may want to check the Internet Archive also.

Later more on Creative Commons and content marketing. My plan was to compare music with academic publishing, why is Springer looking at open options? But the music scene is not relaxed and open as it appears just now. No basis for raising questions about the journals.

The Dead had a policy that seemed to work, lots of shared free stuff and also vinyl sales. Marketing now seems to be to close down any mention.

Burrell and Morgan update , with diagrams

Last week I responded to a tweet from Thomas Ryberg . Tweeting follows recent online version of Networked Learning conference.

I have not yet got into the detail of the article but this post is to expand on a tweet and link to some people I know who think about systems. This includes supporters of Edwards Deming and quality. Previously I have found a bit of a gap between learning and quality as research fields. So any possible links are welcome.

So far I have been sent this graphic by Peter Leeson. More will be explained later. I can see how it might fit with the terms in the diagram. ( The article can be found by search online ) . Image copyright Peter Leeson, though I expect ok to use it with permission. @PeterLeeson on Twitter.

The article is mostly an interpretation of Burrell and Morgan diagram for information system development. The examples are page design and AI for maintenance . My suggestion is to look at screen design as user experience. AI for sound sequences interests me as radio needs to work out how to coexist with this. Possibly takes me off topic but some AI situation would be ok for an update.

Found online

from Sage

also found on bookshelf, diagram from Systems Thinking, Systems Practice book by Peter Checkland showing where soft systems is located on the diagram.

You may ask why Sage and Wiley may not worry about content for purpose of review and comment but Peter Leeson has a copyright notice. When there is a book this may change. Content marketing off topic but returns in a later post.

One book from this century, Learning for Action , Peter Checkland and John Poulter. More clarity on how learning fits with systems thinking.

So links please. Recent articles and case study.

This week, back to video and also radio as social media

This week Phonic FM is back in studio, basement of Phoenix Arts Centre in Exeter. The shows I work with will come later, we are only allowed one person at a time in small space and this will not work for our style. So thinking about social media as a form of radio. Previously we have thought about the end of FM. No sign of this happening, the licence is good for 2027. But gradually more shows appear as listen again on various sites. Clips of sound also appear for the listeners to remix. Some shows have been done from home.

Phonic.fm online working fine. You may get the playout system before 10 in morning or after 6. http://listen.phonic.fm/player/   RadioPlayer or via Phonic.FM

Last week of the Futurelearn MOOC on Blended Learning. I had a good look at last week but still need to catch up. There is a focus on reflection and I am going to think about how this relates to radio. I am interested in education but now mostly working based on radio so I try to compare. "Blended" means to me that there is a mix, that face to face is still part of what is going on. Compares with live music as part of recordings / streams / radio. Also live radio as part of prerecordings, archive, podcast etc. with or without video. My own take on "flipped radio" is that without major resources live radio can be discursive, allow gaps and repitition. Some shows have the highlights for broadcast and the full interview in a podcast. Flipped radio takes as much time as a conversation needs, then the good bits edited for online in random chunks. It may not work very well so far but makes sense to me.

Last week tried to do social media around Wild Show and @wenotno. This week will be much the same. Smoove and Turrell reply to tweets and have new material.

Also looking again at video. Next week Maha Bali will do a keynote for OLC Innovate 2020 , think it will be live on YouTube. Whole event is online. Previously she has worked with Virtually Connecting to show conversations around conferences. I will try to follow how this works out.

The Blended Learning MOOC has a link to a UNESCO model for self assessment. I will check this out during the week. I will also show it to people working with quality systems. How learning happens as a result of audit, another mystery. Professional development is also moving online, video conference provides essential content for video without much extra kit. Not exactly sure how this is done but it should be possible to study once we can all move about a bit.

Twitter feed will be a mix of music and study, possibly confusing at times but may make more sense later.

Tags for #mtw3 and #mtwr possible connection with #nlc2020

I think I have a more clear idea about where the boundary is for Networked Learning. I have been trying to follow back where the free chapters came from as on offer at the moment linked to collections of papers in Springer books. There is a central academic set of ideas, with management somewhere on the edge. I can now understand why the Management Theory at Work conferences did not continue. These had a mix with working managers but there were only two events. I tried with John Burgoyne to work on a third one but only got as far as a social media version with the tag - #mtw3 . A face to face meeting never happened but it gradually became more like radio - management theory at work in radio - #mtwr . I have become more interested in radio over time and there are related issues. Radio stations as organisations face a digital challenge similar to education and others.

Not sure where to look for links but recently found a #mtwr group on Facebook. Lost for four years but lots of links there. It shows how the radio version was working, and how #mtw3 connected previously.

Next few months I will be mostly working on how to continue radio without access to studio. Phonic FM is gradually sorting out live shows but the ones I am involved in require more than one person in studio so not possible with social distance. Expect a mix of social media and repeats, not sure how.

Aspects of #mtwr to be included.

Notes for JD the Producer mostly for radio , text and video may relate also

Notes June 2020

For producer JD and others around radio, though Phonic FM studio not open yet for groups.

I will also do text versions, video or blog etc. Some of this can take more space than radio allows when mixed with music.

#BlendCafe25 is a scifi romcom set in 2025 . Cafe discussions on and off campus about blended learning. Could be Waitrose near St Lukes in Exeter but more likely plan / script meeting nearer high street area.

Blended Learning as in Futurelearn MOOC                  Networked Learning as in conference

Quality Assurance  as part of Blended     and    Deming group

Video      sound    radio    podcast       how to work from home    /   connect in studio

Visits to  BETT  Learning Technologies   King’s Cross

Previously in real time and space but could design as remote / online. Any clips of sound could be mixed in. Or used by someone else.  KingsX now a sort of campus, do they still need the buildings?

also a Google doc, please add comments

Blended Learning MOOC has Institution Level , compare #nlc2020 ?

This week the Blended Learning MOOC arrives at week 4, Institution Level. I am still catching up with previous weeks but this one is interesting as might be outside the scope of core Networked Learning, as in recent online conference. More later in the week when I have seen all the video in the MOOC and checked out past papers from background of previous conferences.

This MOOC has contributions from Aalborg as well as Dublin and Edinburgh. So some of the examples given will be known to people connected to #nlc2020 . This post just a note to invite comment. More later.

Timequake model revised

Over weekend reread Timequake, novel by Kurt Vonnegut. I had thought I was in another Timequake but there are differences. Recently time got ahead in terms of acceptance of online. The lockdown forced many people to work from home and use video etc. Will this last or will it slip back? Education seems not sure what happens this month or at the start of the new year. Over previous decade I have been thinking about video as casual but cameras still expensive, especially with lighting and sound engineering. Now it seems just normal.

Over 20 years since Management Theory at Work not obvious why universities do not get into change for organisations as refers to universities. Moving lectures online has been a start of more online design but not sure where it will go.

The original timequake was for ten years and went back not forward. Vonnegut not very keen on the direction of tech. Magazines already gone as in outlet for short stories. Too many TV channels so unlikely to meet people who watch the shows you watch. The novel not competing with screens. This was about 1997 I think.

The end of the timequake has a lot of collateral damage in the book. Vehicles out of control. This would be part of a new version. I am not saying the tech timequake is enough to make up for the downside of current situation. Just a way to understand recent days.

Swoopers write a story quickly, higgley-piggley ( page 118 Vintage paperback ) but Vonnegut claims to be a basher, "one sentence at a time" till they get it right. Thing is the text seems all higgley-piggley till you realise there is some sort of plot involved. There are about 64 sections, are they on a grid? Plan A is to read it again and take notes. Then maybe go back in the blog and rearrange.

Also I have started to update KoFi site for Attic Archive. I have moved into Room 2 where there is more space and will consider links to digital items.
