Draft ahead of next Wild Show / some chat on @wenotno

Chris Norton is away on jury service so me and JD are extending our talk on a Thursday to last beyond 10.30 and towards 12. Last week we repeated a clip from guest Joseph Parsons as he is on another UK tour. This coming week we hope to persuade the Storyteller to stay maybe 15 minutes after the Drama Hour show.

Previously he did an evening performance as part of Management Theory at Work in Radio, a day conference at the Bike Shed Theatre two summers ago. This covered critique and how academics relate to management projects, digital disruption for example. What I want to discuss is how much has changed meanwhile and whether the positioning of the performance should also change.

I think about various sequences:-

  •  The layout of the book about the Learning Company , 
  •  the programme for the first two conferences Management Theory at Work 
  •  the social media version to relaunch another conference ( nothing so far) - #mtw3
  •  versions of Management Theory at Work in Radio - #mtwr

going into reverse,  #mtwr is now a collection of sound clips that could take a day, could be explained in 30 minutes with brief extracts. Central case study actual problem of how FM radio adjusts to social media, starting with music and including news / chat shows. ( Radio 1 Academy in Hull soon, continues from Devon in 2016)

The Standup Philosopher performance at #mtwr covered issues from the Critical Management Studies aspect of the first actual conference. Chris Grey concluding keynote challenged why academics would get involved in practice anyway, let alone check out technology and the learning company. This should be at the beginning so people can choose to go home or go to another meeting.

The Learning Company book has not been revised to relate to recent social learning developments. There could be playlists on YouTube and other platforms exploring developments from previous versions until a new print version appears.

As video ( or visual radio as Radio 1 call it ) the Lancaster campus is the basis of a straight line with variation in set. Can start with  tech vision at Info Lab 21 , then to critique at Management School, then to Alexanderplatz to check bookshop / library / cafe wi-fi actual situation. The towards arts and humanities for further comment. As of 2017 it seems there has already been substantial change in this central space ( recording will wait anyway till later in the year when the spine is renovated, currently a building site ). So the focus of the drama may have moved into the social science / humanities space towards the arts.

I have done the basis of a sequence around voice computer interfaces and AI. This has links at different locations. Will be updated, mostly the critique phase.

There is a garden ( generating time as first intended) with a balcony that could work as a stage. The sound from the Bike shed Theatre was not too good but the lighting was ok. Recently Bad Blood was ok from the Workshop space in the Phoenix. May try something out and / or use a green screen to transfer to Lancaster later. Not sure. Depends on what any of this would fit with.

At a recent writing workshop in Cumbria I was shown how chance can be worked into a plot. Stock elements of story can be mixed by throwing dice. So if there is a tech vision at the InfoLab 21 end, say a 50% chance it gets past the management school in a form still recognised. But only 25% chance of welcome in the Arts / Soc Sci end even though it may seem to have already happened in the central space. Move the drama along as best fits on any occasion.

Meanwhile in Exeter the Wild Show / @wenotno also considers the urban space around the Phonic FM studio. seems to be like a pizza slice , quarter of a circle starting from North Street and High Street with the Museum nad related buildings in the middle. This is another set, background for chat. but also the reality can be reported. Recently Tubers ( just outside the space across a car park) offers a Youtube Academy. Aimed at young future stars so the business model cannot yet be fully tested. The studio can be hired on a day rate so open to productions as well as being a significant development. Interviews could just ask about how people respond and think differently about online video.

Getting back to next week, my guess is that Jon on @wenotno may think that things have already changed a lot, he prefers the phone to the CD as a source of music tracks. JD on thursday may prefer the reality of Pizza Slice Exeter to forms of fiction or speculation. Comment welcome ahead of the shows and updates later to this blog.

Quick Note on Joseph Parsons / Doghouse Roses Tour and BBC Radio cornwall

BBC Radio Cornwall still playing , may be Claire Rowley sitting in, not sure. Joseph Parsons Duo about half an hour in. Link about here - - should be available for about a month.  Two live songs and a short version of story as we heard on Wild Show last year in Exeter - Phonic FM.

So they did not need any of the clips loaded on Youtube. JD explained to me this morning on wild Show that most shows usually recreate such content in their own style. so we did use one clip again but other shows will do something else. Clips still there for more info if people want to find them. search on Joseph Parsons and Wild Show.

Meanwhile news is the new CD is called The Field - The Forest , recently released for UK. Sample tracks on Soundcloud, link on site.

So not sure which sounds will reach local radio for the rest of the tour. Hope they still include the Bridge Topsham if they get lots more bookings next time.

YouTube Right Time, UK Wrong Place

Note form as busy tomorrow, this will be expanded later.

Not only has YouTube RED not been launched in UK, the cable version of YouTube makes it even more difficult. According to the official blog Youtube TV is now available in "the nation’s largest metro areas—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia—with more U.S. markets coming soon." The "nation" meaning the USA of course.

  • YouTube Red Originals. With a YouTube TV membership, you can watch all of our YouTube Red Original series and movies right in the new YouTube TV app.

So it looks like the sub includes RED. Even stronger base for those production facilities in those locations.

Advertising is still horrible. I still think there is no point in launching #mtwr - sort of conference on management theory around radio - without a sub option to skip the ads. But this won't happen in the UK. So probably best to stick to playlists and links and check these metro areas as a start.

Same thing for music and performance. Seems to be some connection between media resource and music styles. So the YouTube mix of education and entertainment still making sense. Just with a limited role for the UK.

Notes on Joseph Parsons tour 2017, can radio swap stations?

This is to expand on a recent tweet which may be too cryptic. Coming out of a long weekend some things from last week may make sense this next week.

Last year on the Wild Show, Phonic FM in Exeter, we did an interview with Joseph Parsons and promoters of the Topsham / Launceston events. I recently noticed a 2017 tour, seems to find stops along the way to Scotland and the Doghouse Roses, mentioned in interview.

Also on tour booked for BBC Radio Cornwall. ( shows I relate to are on Tue and Thur so no fit this time with tour schedule)

Since last year I have thought more about radio / YouTube , clips and reuse. So have divided the 2016 interview into six clips. Creative Commons on YouTube. Added to playlist of samples from last year.

BBC and other local media very welcome to use any of this. Should this be a general approach to a tour?

Could we use an extract later from BBC Cornwall for review and comment? Repeat some info anyway?

#mtwr, RGB2 as channels for YouTube

See previous posts on how the channels started as developments from Rougemont Global Broadcasting / my own basic Will Pollard channel. Problem is how to get more definition and raise production standards. So far the scope has been very wide. The idea is for Management theory at Work in Radio to relate to radio as an example of organisation in flux. The Management Theory at Work conferences showed a basis of theory for such situations and a more academic version could be revived for a more general model. RGB2 could cover performance near Exeter but starts with topics around this, production and arrangements. There are now many YouTube channels that can be supported. So far some of the same ideas turn up that are also part of the #mtwr discussion. Possibly this will be more as chat than tending towards academic terms. Not quite sure but there will be a bit more focus for both channels.

Meanwhile the Will Pollard / Rougemont Global Broadcasting channel will continue with much the same scope, though including source material that may be edited later for the other channels. For example stock shots of a walk through Lancaster campus that will only make sense when the talks are part of the edit.

In Exeter the concentration will be on Albert Space West, the area close to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Possibly more near the river and canal over the summer. But some locations will just be ides in a blog as text, not so much full video till some sort of funding is arranged.

YouTube RED is still not launched in the UK. Advertising is not going to fit with an academic / professional audience though subscriptions should be ok comparing to conference fees. Somewhere on the planet there is probably already an online conference about management theory and radio. Or how sound content marketing relates to education sites. We will keep looking. For local social media YouTube has also launched a cable service in some USA urban areas. Presumably this encourages more content in YouTube itself that can be found for local interest. Exeter or other UK areas could work just as well but presumably with less funding opportunities.

I will do a lot more looking at playlists. Still hoping to develop channels longterm but seems more likely that content or models already exist and often best to link anyway.

Tubers supports better use of green screens

Tubers is a new academy in Exeter, the courses are intended for young people. Anyone can rent space though and with friends from Phonic FM I have tried out the VR space that doubles as a green screen. The first edit attempts did not work all that well. On Adobe Premiere Elements I just said yes when it offered to remove the solid background on loading. I should have waited till I found the green key, hidden away in the tools menu. This works much better though.

This has also encouraged me to look again at previous attempts. Using a blue wall in the high street works better with a still from the park.

Expect more of this approach. We will probably be outside more over the summer but return to Tubers when there is less light.

Both of these are on RGB2, the start of a channel to raise production standards from the level so far. Not quite right yet, but the intention is there to understand green screens and work out how to be able to record all times of the year.

AI expands scope of post FM radio playlist / voice interfaces

The YouTube playlist on voice interfaces has been expanded to include AI. This follows a clip borrowed from the Today program on BBC Radio 4. Yuval Noah Harari spoke about the dangers in AI. On the Wild Show and @wenotno we made a connection with radio as in social media clips. This may have gone further than Today is yet aware of. Actual broadcasts are made up of clips and also the audience is able to switch to a choice of other sources. The voice assistants and/or search engines are part of this in ways we cannot fully control.

The playlist is currently suitable for radio, could be used as part of future shows, but also could relate to an academic or professional conference. At experimentality there was critique of the cloud.(Rob Coley and Dean Lockwood). Harari on AI is the closest yet to a similar take on voice interfaces that I can find. Suggestions welcome on other links.

Adobe Spark, Creative Hub Social , looking for connections Tech Exeter

Sorry for short notice but I only recently realised the Creative Hub Social is coming up at the Phoenix on Thursday. I am still trying to find connections around what we discovered about Adobe Spark at BETT. there was a lot else but this was the best free offer. How to link to other Adobe products? Phoenix seems a good base as they have licences on Creative Cloud. Still not sure about the video edit suite at University Library.

Spark is actually in the cloud, started on tablets, can create short video presentations, graphics including txt, web pages.

Turns out Tech Exeter will also be in Phoenix, later time. Any legal hacks on Adobe? long shot but could be interesting.

Adobe has moved on to marketing and analytics. Big conference in London coming up. Looks expensive but maybe Digital Exeter knows someone attending? ( My focus still making sense of what we found at BETT, continues on Wild Show and @wenotno on @PhonicFM )

Drifting towards Success, maybe later

Exeter seems to have reached a new level in success. Not sure what to make of it as I am still in muddle mode though moving forward slowly. Last week I went to Digital Exeter and heard about Tubers, new video academy and studio for Youtube. Courses for young people fully booked. There are plans to expand to Plymouth and Bristol, later Cardiff and Taunton. I did try out the green screen there and now more or less know how to edit it, the first two attempts a bit messy. ( Don't accept the robot offer to fix the solid background when you load the clip, find the proper green key option hidden deep in the menu.)

Meanwhile I am still waiting for YouTube RED to launch in the UK so I can monetise new channels. I still don't like the adverts so continue with low level production values. Apparently the new Tubers audience have stopped watching TV and many Vloggers have vast numbers of views. So there is still potential and something continues.

The summer should allow better light outside so zero studio costs. I plan to visit Lancaster campus when they finish their walkway. The site could fit with a sequence for discussion. Topics may include voice recognition for computers, acceptance or not of the MOOC, priority for university investment in buildings or web resource. This last topic may be hardest to raise. Iconic architecture is a good backdrop to ask the question though. Is it possible that disruption will even reach the Business School? I cannot find much about this so far, maybe it is part of the style in which events are part of a success story.

Futurelearn may have got past the stage of loss making and doubt. ( Not sure about the finances but they have started some charges) The OU closures of regional buildings were reported with regret, rarely seen as having any benefit. Recently some courses are on offer connected to Deakin Cloud Campus and this seems a possible route to a viable system. I notice that IBM Watson is in the background. Not sure if this works through voice but it could compare with Alexa from Amazon and others. So during the year I may find a story about this, probably borrowing a clip for a playlist.

A solid story of something working could get a comment from academics on a UK campus, more possible than discussing a messy problem situation. The next Tech Exeter conference is in September so could be a target date even if conversation is informal.

Management Theory at Work in Radio can probably work well as a playlist on YouTube even if a channel is delayed. YouTube RED is available in South Korea and other places where an annual sub compares with cost of a day conference. So content possible without adverts, academics and professionals may well accept.

RGB2 still aims to raise production standards for Rougemont Global Broadcasting ( formal name for my YouTube channel aka user Will Pollard ) but in near future will probably look at the "making of" or "not making of" aspects of other channels. Creatives tend to have their own approach but some comment can turn up round the edges. ( includes bits of sound for Wild Show and @wenotno on @PhonicFM )

The LikeMinds event will return to Exeter later in the year, located at the castle so potentially a good fit for Rougemont Global Broadcasting. Topics are around breakout brands though. #mtwr and #RGB2 may not be at a suitable stage. Still some sort of connection should be possible, even if just messing about with radio as a sketch.

Next event is Hustings at the Boat Shed for Devon County Council elections. I am assuming video is ok but not sure how it will turn out. Suggest Creative Commons and plenty of options and mixing. #mtwr has benefited from the Bike Shed as a venue. The river and canal should work as a location with free lighting but some sort of support always welcome.
