Walks as content containers and chat show, draft

Tomorrow @wenotno is a sort of practice for Wild Show on Thur, same time slot - 10 to 12 in morning UK time. Still uncertain how it will work. Phone calls at 10.30 , 11 , 11.30 unless we message otherwise. No floorplan yet with stand numbers but there is enough to guess. Could start with Apple but not sure where they are. Seem to want us to book for 90 minutes in obscure space, but we will check this. Local interest could be the Met Office, interesting based in Education Show the new non tech space. Why? How to relate to MOOCs? so next stop Futurelearn. We might find Adobe but not sure of route. Aim to finish at NetSupport Radio as last year. If we are lost they may contact JD direct in studio.

This year BETT new design seems to suit the people on show, not the people on visit. we used to start with the Special Educational Needs area then the STEAM village, STEM with Arts. https://www.bettshow.com/bett-trails  So I think we could have a trail in central Exeter that would map to this and help Phonic FM listeners relate to BETT ideas. The RAMM museum has several Minecraft models of Exeter at different dates so connects to Microsoft support. At the Phoenix the Digital unit at the back has courses on several Adobe products but also Audacity and Wordpress so some variety. The library has a Fab Lab , definitely connects to STEM , Arts aspects to be explored.

This could be one walk with three stops withing two hours, but more likely three shows. Not sure. Getting to Met Office or campus needs a bus and more of a plan. Apple Shop can be reached but not allowed to film or record though can speculate.

Design, some practice

Next Thursday Wild Show on Phonic FM will include phone calls from BETT in London. JD the producer left to do show by himself. Will the phone calls start at the expected times? Should he have a backup of sound clips? Music of various known lengths?

So far various plans but not sure how they fit. Info on BETT still changes.

Wednesday before setting off We Not Know show also 10 -12 . JD as special guest so maybe a design will emerge or there will be enough clips to use again in emergency.

Fallback is to ask NetSupport Radio to phone JD if nobody turns up before 12.

Any suggestions welcome.

Next month similar from Learning Technologies.

HE may be included or may wait till briefing for Standup Philosopher. still needs design in some form.

Design, some theory

I have put up a clip from Wild Show to link to #dskt . "designing situated knowledge transformation" , title of recent conference, book, tweets. I did find some slides and may have a rough idea of what this is about.

JD is not convinced that being a DJ has much to do with science, still more of an art. But he will consider design as a basis before the show starts. I came across "Science DJ" on YouTube so thought there may be Design Science DJs. JD thought this meant something about DJs, yet to be found.

Previouly I was part of the OLDS -MOOC included Yishay Mor and others on Design Science

I chose as my bright idea to design around a way to explain that YouTube has a Creative Commons option that allows remix. Over time this is increasingly hidden. At least I got over the idea it was possible, though not how to do it. So I did some edits myself.

Design Science continues. Also Creative Commons. Laura Czerniewicz will be part of a workshop on the lost idea of the commons at OER20 . Early Bird tickets still available.

The tweets around #dskt have suggested universities are too "mysterious" , maybe a way to describe some distance. What is knowledge when not "situated" ? Is this like Modes 1 and 2 that seem not much spoken of recently? I did try out #Mode2Learning as a tag, see previous posts. Not sure what it means but worth testing  out, may be added to.

I notice the Learning Technologies show next month has fewer stands from the university end, call it mystery. i may be wrong about this or maybe some late bookings. But there must be some form of learning or knowledge. O'Reilly and LinkedIn Learning both booked. More on this later. Clues welcome.

Digital Turn, will there be clarity before the summer in Berlin?

Through Twitter I hear about a Summer Academy on Humanities and Media 2020 - "Technologies of Bureaucracy: Before and After the Digital Turn" . Organised by Stanford and Leuphana in Berlin June 22-26th. Papers deadline Feb 15th.

Looks very interesting and a useful context for other events and conversations. I am getting ready for BETT and Learning Technologies, then thinking about the Platform University conference at Lancaster in March. Also talking to the Standup Philosopher about the ruins of the Fortress University as a backdrop for video. ( see below )

I expect the Platform University to be seen as a dark side. At trade shows we will look for the positives from tech. Partly as radio but also as education. The MOOC has been a benefit so far so we follow the ways to make the platforms viable.  Peter Horrocks spoke about a Fortress University at Durham in explaining how Futurelearn could help to open things up. So far not much support for this, he spoke too much in managerialese and had to resign. I do not know what the OU policy is now.

The Berlin event call for papers mentions "platform capitalism" and "surveillance capitalism" and seems to suggest the "Digital Turn" has happened. Not sure this is so. In UK the boom in student accommodation continues. Spectacular buildings abound on campus. The recent investment in Futurelearn came from Seek, a jobs website in Australia. Reasons why UK unis do not invest in platforms seem to be more about a lack of tech awareness than any issues with capitalism. Real estate just assumed as stable.

Meanwhile in Exeter there are only two record stores. HMV with lots more vinyl survives but concerns in Plymouth and Bristol. Will education have similar sequence to music? Not sure of the timescale but maybe.

So far no news of Coursera at Learning Technologies. They were there previous two years. Not sure why this is. Maybe they will book space at the last moment. They are an inspiration as they seem to be viable. Evidence that something is happening. Whatever the view turns out to be about the Platform University or the "digital turn" there could also be evidence that something is happening.

Shows on Phonic FM gradually do more with social media. From the basement of the Phoenix Arts Centre. Mixed results, some negative. More on this as it continues.

Notes ahead of #BETT2020 , #LTUK20

Started to browse and find links so collecting them here.

CES mentions for 5G but seems most news will be at Mobile World Congress later in Feb so could ignore phones till then. Tablets ok in most schools.

Hardware for VR and video chat expected from FaceBook. Can it be recorded? Need for mp3 as minimum radio.

I found one alarming clip on 5G search. I guess the Platform University conference in Lancaster will be looking on the dark side. My usual concern is to not lose track of positive aspects , possibilities from tech that support learning. But this clip has some informed concerns.

there may be other clips where 5G contributes something.

Apple may be at BETT. Probably continues "Everyone Can Create" , vid here

Adobe has update on Spark from late last year

also adding "social learning " to Captivate, more on this at Learning Technologies.

For balance worth pointing out that Serif Affinity now offer software without subscription that is well worth a look. Not sure what the offer is for schools, cannot find them yet at BETT.

Shows such as @wenotno and #WildShow will be looking for any way to get sound clips.

Fortress University, back to journalism

Started to think recently about a drama version of the Fortress University, set in ruins of castle as scifi future, after learning is more online. see previous posts.

But now realise there could be another take on more formal journalism as an approach, moving back in time and asking how things might have gone in a different direction.

Why did Futurelearn get investment from Seek, Australian employment site? Could the OU find other UK partners? Another uni? Why was Seek deal not much reported in UK press? Mainstream not just specialist.

Could Guardian have reported Peter Horrocks lecture on Fortress University with more of a welcome for ideas on how to open things up? Peter Wilby mostly interested in staff complaints about direction. Guardian not very interested in online learning. May relate to problems with newspapers. Earlir Horrocks wrote about "Fortress Journalism"  ( when working at BBC World Service ) . Not sure when this gets loose enough for discussion.

Presumably there is a policy inside the OU that replaces / continues some of policy around Futurelearn. Not clear what it is, but back story can be found when more obvious.

Expanded tweet - Futurelearn courses

Seems the Unbundled University course will not appear again. But maybe it is being updated. Second time was much like the original as far as I could tell. Comments different though. things change very quickly.

For example 2U ( Wikipedia ) has had a falling share price during 2019 and seems to have changed direction. Maybe not so much emphasis on big names, more on value. Not sure.

Futurelearn and Coursera both have had investment from Seek, Ox emplyment site. What is this about? Still seems odd that investment from other UK unis was not forthcoming. But valuations can change.

Online Educator course continues. I understand the emphasis on pedagogy but sometimes the technology could be a focus. Maybe do the course again when 5G is more available? Apple rumour for September. Connectivity around games / entertainment will also change context for courses / learning.

Issues around BETT / Learning Technologies

This is notes looking for comment around tech and learning, partly as social media, also as part of radio shows on Phonic FM - Wild Show on Thursdays, @wenotno some Wednesdays.

JD will be in studio on 23rd Jan for BETT and 13th Feb Learning Technologies. Others phoning in from ExCEL.

Looking for tech that helps sound for radio, also video. Topics include asking why there is so much student accommodation in Exeter? Will education move online? We would like to get comments from others in Exeter. Guests welcome and also links please to other mp3 we could use. Exeter College radio and university student media may have some clips. We would like to know of others going to these events.

Is there any research on expected numbers of students to study online compared to needing to be on campus all year long? Have business schools done study on future of residential courses?

Futurelearn will be at BETT so can ask about MOOC etc. Phones not much welcome in schools but plenty on tablets, including video. Special needs area has always included voice as computer interface, now a general concern.

More over next weeks, often on Twitter. #BETT2020 #LTUK20  me @will789gb show @wenotno also @JonathanMahy and @jonathandaly12

Mode 2 Learning #Mode2Learning recap

From last year, still not clear what this means but the tag sort of works in Twitter.

Previously I tried to follow Mode 1 & 2 knowledge as in academic disciplines and practice. Trying out #Mode2Learning as a Twitter tag found @Nathanmofomme and a link to a lecture also on YouTube.

Still hard to find much detail on what is understood. I still think the original work on Modes 1 & " was concerned to hold on to what is special about 1. Recent use seems to be expecting 2 to be a mdel to follow.

I want to comer back to this as seems BETT and Learning Technologies will both be mostly about practice or forms of knowledge that could be vocational.

So more on this as things turn up next few weeks. Meanwhile please search sometimes on #Mode2Learning and suggest what it connects to.
