Expanded tweet - questions on radio - Lancaster conference

Following previous post now found tweet about a Lancaster conference on the "Platform University". I sent off three tweets together but needs a bit more space.

For new readers, Wed and Thur this week radio shows on Phonic FM in central Exeter. We notice a lot of building for student accommodation. Our question, how will this work with learning moving online? We follow MOOC developments, attend BETT and Learning Technologies. Record stores have more or less gone, retail under pressure. Harlequins mall to be demolished and replaced by students. Is this stable? FT story on bubble.

Today I found tweet for Lancaster conference on "Platform University", seems to be a critique approach. ( Shows #WildShow and @wenotno both mostly music. We may not get into this but my own personal interest as background ) - A while ago I went to Lancaster conferences on Management Theory at Work, connecting academics and managers. Stopped after two but I think the Networked Learning series related if the technology has a consequence for unis as organisation. I also went to IAS conferences on Knowledge Economy and Experimentation. Now I try out Management Theory at Work in Radio ( disrupting into social media ) .

One idea is to use the Lancaster campus as a location. The Spine walk connects InfoLab21 with central public space and an arts venue. See previous posts.

Recently Exeter City Council have posted on YouTube an opinion video with Harlequins as a location. See previous post. So we may do more in areas not too far away. Gradually locations could be signs for elements in conversation.

Both with Networked Learning and IAS there has been a strong element of critique. The "Platform University" conference seems to be similar. Could be mostly the "dark side" of LinkedIn, Facebook etc. I do not notice anything positive about the MOOC, Futurelearn or Coursera for example. I remember Tweets around the time Peter Horrocks was under pressure at the OU. Maybe he spoke too much managerialese but most academics seemed to be hard to convince about the case for Futurelearn. Later not much reporting for the investment from Seek.  But I think it odd that only the OU of UK unis will invest in learning platform.

The "Unbundled University" MOOC on Futurelearn is based on research from Leeds and Cape Town. I think in South Africa there is a commitment to online learning as a resource for reaching a wider proportion of potential students at realistic costs.

For whatever reason at least the "Platform University" has noticed something is happening. Worth asking the question what is positive about it?

Meanwhile found a YouTube vid from IIMBx with Simon Nelson from Futurelearn. Slide claims massive global demand for unis so maybe Exeter and Lancaster for example will continue on current scale. Still worth checking out how a city centre will develop.

Questions on radio - Wild Show and @wenotno

This post is to explain questions from last week ahead of next week. We Don't Know show on Wed 10 -12, Wild Show Thur 10 -12 , both on Phonic FM. This week was a bit of a ramble in some ways so next week may clarify. Also we welcome guests and so need to explain what the questions may be. ( They can talk about something else as well of course ).

The prompt to stress our questions is the recent video on YouTube from Exeter City Council. Phil Bialyk is recorded in front of the Harlequins shopping centre off Queen Street. He explains support for student accommodation and suggests this could be open to all, not just students. Radio can expand into "visual radio" ( term from Radio 1 on visit to Phoenix) so we have tried out street recording previously. Also  student accommodation is an issue.

previously will789gb and JD on Fore Street

Towards the end of this question about how much debt is involved in student accommodation boom. Could there be a bust? Also what will happen with online degrees? Both shows have discussed the MOOC. We will visit BETT and Learning Technologies at ExCEL early next year. So far no feedback from Council or University. Seems to be only 3 year projection of student numbers. Buildings could last for 20 years so what will happen. Record shops have gone over ten years or so. Could education be similar? This is at least a question to ask.

Last week Like Minds was in Exeter Castle and Setsquared hosted presentations that inlcuded mention of online learning, probably in a blended mix with face to face. Is there any research on proportions and timescale?

This is the bit where Producer JD makes a fairly clear statement.

Leaving it there. Search YouTube for other clips from #WildShow or @wenotno . Now I get this far I realise it could be confusing to add them in now.

SetSquared at Like Minds Exeter, link for discussion?

At LikeMinds Nudge soon in Exeter there will be a pitch session hosted with SetSquared from Exeter and other universities over quite a wide region.

Could be a topic for wild Show on Phonic FM. Like Minds 18th October. Wild Show 17th 10 -12 in morning. Previously we have talked about the MOOC and online learning. We wonder at the investment in student accommodation. Will it all be needed if learning moves online? So far no guests to discuss this but Like Minds event may be a chance for some chat. Digital change is not just a topic, even the campus may be part of this.

Seems projects may have a mix of blended / action /formal learning. Need to check this.

Jonathan Mahy and Will Pollard from the We Don't Know show will be at Like Minds. No radio show the same week but every other Wednesday. More in later shows.

Guests welcome live for 17th and/or mp3 via Twitter or links to existing clips.

Flickr Photos from way back link Comics and Like Minds

From previous posts still thinking about comics as a format to work out scripts for animation / video. I have been trying out locations as a basis for a chat show. I have now found a Flickr site for Jo Hannis starting with Lancaster campus. You should find other ones with characters from Twinity. These could be the basis of a comic but probably there are more possibilities now.

I notice some of the collections are from previous Like Minds events in Exeter. The next one is very soon at the Castle. Time travel comes to mind. Seems learning scene is now roughly where music was about ten years ago. Could be 20 so either go back further for music or wait for learning to catch up. Some organisations change slowly.

Not sure if this is on the Like Minds agenda but will try to check things out, maybe in background.

Continues as chat on Wild Show / We Don't Know on Phonic FM.

Background photo, can be used with people upfront.

Photos test comic backgrounds

See previous post around some tweets. - @will789gb - Later will be a bit easier to follow. Have tested out Photoshop Elements, probably there are other methods as well.

vintage effect also possible
so can do an analogue / digital photo story
even if cannot find some archive

Catching up, photos follow

I have been on a holiday to Kendal and Lakes, now back in Exeter. About to edit some photos. I realise some people understand phones so post on a constant basis. I am still habituated to desktop and have a limited phone most of the time. Using one as a camera but cannot work keyboard well enough to tweet.

Back in Kendal for Comics next weekend. Photos soon of windows already there last week, also from printed guide a still of LICA building on Lancaster campus. I still have ideas about a video sometime but a comic may be easier. Aims to discuss how digital tech changes things. Meanwhile I think MOOC etc moves things off campus anyway. Continues as a topic around BETT and Learning Technologies. But forms of fiction also.

Meanwhile still working on video from Deming SIG events at the CQI. Fairly slow but the concern is how to do video / online content from a lecture / presentation / chat . Relates to the content so should work out eventually.

In Exeter we can do radio shows for FM, the studio works ok. How to develop social media formats also is still an issue. Guests welcome if you are nearby or bits of mp3 can be mixed and matched. In Kendal there is no local FM with similar scope that I can find but the Comics promo includes a podcast. There is a plan for more digital resource sometime soon but not very clear what is possible.

So probably test things out and collect bits of script. Comic and/or video to follow. Locations could include Kendal high street, walk from Brewery to phone shops and back again. Discussion of analogue and digital cameras for stills. Historical drama, what date best to set for interesting chat?
