HelloSpiders

Homebase blog for a group of sites updated by Will Pollard. The hope is to work out how they link together so people can find the bits of interest.

Notes on video, HMV Exeter, Deming SIG, Platform University.

These notes to find links between different things going on. I am still trying to work out how to do video. Now so advanced online that I can usually find something else from another place and time where the content fits well enough. Later this week I will b in London for a meeting of the Deming SIG of the Chartered quality Institute. I doubt we will get to a production level for release though some interest for people who cannot be there. In Lancaster there was to be a conference on the Platform University. Now postponed to March so I can be there but I expect video not a priority.

Meanwhile in Exeter I have done an edit on some clips from Black Monsoon at HMV last Friday. It may just be that the music scene is ready for casual video. These are ok for low level. No tripod, one camera. A performance and two bits of conversation.

So there could be similar at a more formal meeting. I will have a look for examples already on Youtube around A3 sheets, Deming cycle etc and also Platform University. Both for and against. I think the conference will be mostly critique, but there could be a discussion about organisations and digital transformation as if this would have benefits.

I may do an A3 sheet to look at some problems. I ran out of space on a card so stopped to make sure i had enough battery for interview after the performance. For the Simmertones in January I could ask for electricity feed and space for a tripod. Also other people could do video so more choice of shots for an edit.

On  PhonicFM we can do sound ok and phone cameras cope with the poor lighting in the studio. Can put some of this on YouTube. Example of chat around student accommodation and visits to other studios. May relate to Platform University discussion. Radio can be "visual radio" , mingles with video. Lecture capture exists even without a drift online so sound clips may be available just as it happens, without a plan.

Free Fibre Broadband as an Imaginary

Still thinking about the Labour policy of free broadband. seems to have got a bit hidden last few days but i think it needs more study. So far I have not heard much about how it supports other policy. Lifelong learning, regional economic support. Could reduce health costs if online integrated with NHS. Not easy to do but if access is assumed it could be done. So far most of the government schemes have had to assume a paper version still needed as an option. Cost savings is this really can go.

More inspiring is the potential. The web started with a vision of access, cheap distribution. Now getting lost in market schemes. On a recent Futurelearn course I was told about the Commons and Market as "imaginaries" . As memory serves these are mental pictures which come to mind and interact with behaviour. web needs a refresh as "Commons" . Just done a search, think this is a psper that fits in, cannot find the Futurelearn course at the moment.

"Commons" can go back to California. I don't think it puts off the tech companies or the startup aproach. There is a lot of content and services that can be on offer if fibre access is assumed. This may come later to other places as costs drop but there would be an attraction in a location with a large demand. UK already advanced in using digital, even with the broadband as present.

Also interesting to have another look at South Korea. I previously wrote as citizen journalist for OhmyNews. What has been the relation between government and companies ? Seems to have changed over time. I will try to get an update.

Free fibre to be explored, next few weeks. May just be an imaginary but once imagined these things can happen somewhere. Just usually not in the UK. Reality long way behind.

Platform University and back to the Fortress University

The Platform University conference has been postponed to March next year because of current disputes around pensions. Suits me because I could not have made the sates this November. I think it will be in critique mode. Meanwhile I support the direction of MOOC platforms such as Futurelearn and Coursera.

See Class Central report on Coursera finances.  The free option continues. Possibly seen as content marketing, a way to promote other courses. Universities seem to face a choice in how to promote online courses, high percentages for outside platforms or as part of a MOOC.

I will follow through Twitter any news on the Unbundled University. Seems a related ides.

Also going back to the Fortress University, described by Peter Horrocks in a lecture at Durham.

At this time he was still switching OU budgets into Futurelearn. Sadly he only spoke in managerialese so was not persuasive. But is the "Fortress" description in any way accurate? Is there a positive angle on Facebook?

With others from Wild Show and @wenotno on Phonic FM in Exeter I will be going to BETT and Learning Technologies. BETT mostly for schools but some university tech staff do attend. At Learning Technologies last year both Coursera and Futurelearn had stands. Not booked yet but O'Reilly and LinkedIn Learning definitely there.

Update Pinned Tweet - Labour Free Broadband as an inspiration hook.

My Twitter profile may be confusing as mostly I relate to learning tech and music, then also rave about Brexit and Corbyn. Music also on @wenotno, radio show. During the UK election, most of remaining 2019 I will concentrate on supporting Labour. The proposal for free broadband is an inspiration, central hook to0 imagine a positive future in various ways. So far not much comment on how media content / education / health can change with this. Also interest in how politics is different for most online compared to print in UK. See posts for more on how some USA newspapers / CNN also oppose Trump but for the UK there seems to be a bigger gap between Brexit newspapers and most views on social media. Lecture last year by Corbyn convinced me this will develop over time, next couple of years. Newspapers so far seem to just ignore what he has to say. ( see readG blog for some detail on Guardian) He started on age profile of BBC audience, this could get moreso. Various forms of co-operative social media are possible, can relate back to Corbyn lecture. I notice only Business Insider asked a question relevant to the occasion. My blog on Fleet Street in Europe and Cyberspace may deal with other aspects of newspapers in context of broadcast, also declining circulation. Some of my retweets and messages are for @wenotno music show so go there if music is main interest.
